Deneen Connolly

How do you spell grace in motion? Why, Deneen, of course!

Introducing Deneen

I have known Deneen for just over six months, but our friendship began in one of those wonderfully unexpected ways that seem almost too perfect to have been planned.

We first met in the green room of a music venue in Halifax in December 2025. My son, Christopher, had invited me to join him on a road trip while he performed with George Masswohl and Gerry Finn—two accomplished musicians with deep roots in the Canadian music scene. My mission for the trip was simple: photograph musicians and capture the energy of live performance.

During the first intermission, I wandered into the green room. Out of nowhere, Christopher mentioned to a woman sitting nearby that I was planning to leave very early the next morning to photograph Peggy’s Cove. He casually added that I probably wouldn’t mind taking her along.

As it turned out, he was right.

I explained that my priority was photography, which meant an early departure and the possibility that she might find herself in front of the camera. Would she be comfortable with that?

Her answer immediately caught my attention.

“Not at all. I’m a dancer. I’d love the opportunity to dance.”

At that moment, the stars aligned. Deneen joined Nataliia and me for the trip, and what had started as a simple landscape photography outing suddenly became something much more interesting.

The next morning, the weather played its part perfectly. Rain accompanied us for most of the drive to the world-famous Peggy’s Cove. Then, almost on cue, the skies began to clear as we pulled into the parking lot. Barefoot on the granite rocks and windswept grass, Deneen moved with a natural grace that seemed completely at home in the landscape. Nataliia and I photographed as she danced, capturing movement, light, and emotion against one of Canada's most iconic backdrops.

The photographs were remarkable, but what I remember most are the conversations. The hours spent talking on the drive, over lunch, and throughout the day revealed a thoughtful, creative, and engaging person. By the end of the trip, a chance introduction had become a genuine friendship.

What we created at Peggy’s Cove felt a little magical. In fact, I’ve included images from that original session later in this blog because they remain some of my favourite examples of what can happen when preparation, opportunity, and creativity meet.

Fast forward several months. Through Facebook, I learned that George—Deneen’s husband—would be performing in town in Fiddler on the Roof, which meant Deneen would be visiting as well. I reached out with an invitation to step in front of my camera once again, and she graciously accepted.

What followed was an absolute delight. We approached the session as collaborators, each bringing our own creative energy to the process. Deneen provided the movement, expression, and artistry; I worked to capture those fleeting moments of grace and motion. In many ways, our interaction became a dance of its own—a conversation without words, communicated through movement, timing, and light. The editing was just as magical as the shoot, with little gems popping up in the compositions.

The results are presented here for your judgment.

For ease of viewing, I’ve organized the images into five sections based on location, followed by a standalone black-and-white portfolio that explores movement and form from a different perspective.

I am sure there will be more shoots in our future, come back often.
